I drive a 2005 Chevy Impala. It has 40,000 miles on it. When I bought it, I was getting about 21-23 MPG. Now, I am getting closer to 12-15 MPG. I know it is due for a tune up but I don't think that would affect my mileage that bad. My tires are full and my vaccuum hoses are all good. I put regular unleaded gas in it. Does anyone else drive a car like this and have any ideas what could be wrong with it? I have an extended warranty but it has a $250 deductible that I don't want to pay if it is something I can do something about myself. I am a single mom with not a lot of extra cash. Any ideas?????

My car keeps track of my oil changes for me. I stopped in and asked the dealership if they thought my car would be hurt from not getting the tune up right away and they said no. Now, they want money and I think he would have told me yes to get my money if nothing else.

i own a repair shop in Tennessee,,and i can help you,,you said it had 40 k on it,,if it hasn't had any new plugs put in it ,,its due a set,,spark plugs will kill the mileage on one when they get worn out,,the gap gets so wide that it cant fire good anymore,,and the fuel economy goes out the door,,and also the air filter may need to be changed in it too should be changed every 5 thousand miles,,i have seen a lot of cars do what yours is doing,,and don't worry ,,it will come out OK,,it needs a god set of plugs,,and a new air filter,,and it will be fine,,if you do the plugs your self,,be sure,,and gap them right,,and don't over tighten them to much,,good luck with it,,i hope this help,s.

Actually your Impala should not need a tune until 100k, GM put platinum plugs in that thing and with only 40k the wires should be fine. Fuel Filter, Air Filter and Driving habits. Also take into consideration having to use power robbing air-conditioning during the hot months.

When was the last time you had you oil, oil filter, and air filter changed? I would bet you the cost of a tune-up that is it. Go do that NOW. If not, you are just throwing more money away.

I know maintenance on a vehicle costs money, however!, the cost of fixing all the problems that occur for not keeping up on your maintenance is a lot more!

The above work shouldn't cost you more than $30. Get to it!

You don't mention Air Filter, How often you change the oil, or if the timing has been adjusted. Yes, if these things got out of whack, your mileage COULD go down.

Get tune up and ask an ASE Certified mechanic to take a look at it.

Hi Kelly, I researched your issue, and was unable to find any information. The smell of gas fumes indicates that something is definitely wrong. Because I am not a technician and for safety reasons, I would suggest you contact your dealer to get a proper diagnosis. Vanessa-GM Customer Service

Check your tire pressures, and go by the recomended pressures, inside the driver's door. If they are low, then that could be some of it. Also, see what you have hiding in your trunk(back of the car)...Alot of junk equals alot of weight. Useless weight. Also get the air filter checked. 40k miles, on that same air filter will do this too. Tuneups aren't really necessary till about 100k miles nowadays. Good luck.

Have you kept up with oil changes? But that shouln't be a factor with the bad MPG The thing about oil changes is the fact that a Chevy Dealer service shop will also check other things like air filter.pvc valve, look for any leaks. And you can ask the mechanic questions like what you have concerning bad MPG and they will tell ya what might be the problem for FREE!!!!!

well what else is happening? if the gas mileage is effected that much, which is a lot, then there has to be something else happening, i.e. sluggish acceleration, hard starting, something. if you want you can email me w/ what else is happening and i could probably give you a pretty good estimate on what it is.
