When I opened an online account I was able to place a buy order immediately, before any money was transferred. This was about 10 minutes from first clicking the "Open Account" button.

The buy was confirmed and I had 3 days to settle. Of course I just went ahead and arranged for electronic transfer. This was verified in about 20 seconds and posted to my account (total time about 15 minutes). The funds were transferrd via ACH and comfirmed early the next morning.

Thats why you have an online account.
