I'd say the most ubiquitous are probably Keiko, Hanako, Yumi, Mariko, and Akiko for women, and Taro, Takashi, Hiroshi and Akira for men.

Common names when I was in school were:

Girls - Youko, Yoko, Sachiko, Hiromi, Hitomi, Emiko
Boys - Youji, Youichi, Takeshi, Koji, Koichi, Akira

Family Names - Sato, Suzuki, Tanaka, Ito, Nakamura

Yuki , seems to be rather common for girls.
It can also be Yukiko or Yukie.
Yuki , in Japanese means snow and purity(sort of like power/strength)

For boys , I would have to say Kenji is rather common , And family name Tanaka is also heard often.

Takahashi (surname) I think is common like Smith is in the Western world.
Yasuo.. - Male (the name I meant, don't know where I got Mendu from).. :)
