Yes, it's probably an Allen wrench. If you don't have the tool solidly in the screw head, or if the tip of the Allen wrench is worn or rounded, it can easily strip the hole in the screw head and make it look round rather than hex. You could try using a new Allen wrench, or grinding the one you have down slightly to get good, clean edges. Then when you place the Allen wrench in the screw head again, tap it in with a hammer until it has a good solid grip.

ok, everyone already said its an Allen wrench. But you said you messed up both pieces. First thng I would do is go spend $1 or less and buy the same size allen wrench, then tap it with a hammer it may actually work ok, if you havent ruined it totally. if that is the case, you can also have someone with an "EZ-out" kit drill out the center of the screw and remove it, but only if you know a person who has this the kit is more money than its worth for one screw. last resorts are vise-grip the screw, or cut the head off , or drill the screw out completly

It's called an Allen wrench. The only way I know to unscrew the bolt is, if it is at least sticking out a little bit, use a vise grip (plyers) to grab it tight and unscrew it.

A trick I use is a moto tool and cut a straight cut across it then use a regular screwdriver. Sometimes I use a hacksaw to make this cut, but most of the time it works. Then replace the screw.

When it comes to wood smoothing tools, it's important to understand what to use, when and why. Use this guide to determine whether sanding, scraping or hand planing will work best for smoothing wood on your finished product.
