i was wondering if you could obtain sodium (not salt but pure sodium) in large quantities (as in 4+ lbs of it) from a company without being a teacher or in some industry that requires it or is there a way to isolate if from some other substance and get it (as in take the chlorine out of salt). Lithium and potassium would work too if there was a way to get either of them.

true that i could make a bomb out of it but i think just throwing it in a pond would be cool enough for me and besides i people can make bombs out of fertilizer and ammonia and obtaining that isnt too hard. (btw im only a sophomore)

You need this why? 4 pounds of pure sodium sounds like it would set off alarms at Homeland Security. I bet you would have ATF at your house wanting to "interview" you regarding your intentions...

the problem with reducing sodium from salt water is that it's reduction potential is such that it will never be reduced. instead H2O will be reduced to H2 and O2. you need to electrolyze it from another solution that doesn't reduce as easily. this would teach you a good bit of chemistry so have fun!
by the way, throwing sodium into water is a bad idea if you're not careful, but it's really not dangerous if you are careful. it's simply an explosion. however, definitely don't put the sodium on a surface that you care about because even a small amount generates enough heat to burn through a lab benchtop (i know from experience). also, don't expect to put the fire out with anything you'd normally put fires out with. metal fires generate their own oxidants (i think) and so dousing it with water, smothering with blankets, etc will not help. wear gloves, eye protection, and keep everyone else away.
lithium and potasium i don't think have the same effect as sodium.
DEFINITELY DON'T MAKE MORE THAN A FEW GRAMS OF IT. IT'S MUCH MORE POWERFUL/TEMPERAMENTAL THAN ANYTHING YOU'VE HANDLED BEFORE.

Throwing sodium in a pond for fun would be illegal disposal of hazardous waste. Not a good thing to do.

stuff like that is regulated so people don't throw it into lakes randomly. the sellers should make certain of your status with an university etc. before selling them, but you might get lucky on ebay

Yeah.......
You can extract it from salt. I could look up the specifics of the process and tell you. But I know what sodium can do......
Tell me first what your age is and what you "need" it so badly for.......?????
