It is a custom. After Labor Day you wear "Winter White" or off white.

White leather was extremely expensive back in the day, so most shoes and purses that were white were made of wicker and straw; not very warm or sturdy for fall/winter/early spring weather.
I find it amazing that people will come up to me and comment that I shouldn't be wearing white after Labor Day, but no one seems to care about unwed mothers, public drug use, and disgustingly low cut fashions!

That's from MY day. I didn't think kids even knew about that!!! That's the way it was when I was younger. After Labor day, no white shoes or purses. You could wear black in the warmer months, as long as it was pat n' leather. I can't spell it.!!You know...shiny black..that was ok in the summer. I grew up in a wonderful time, really. We had customs,rules...we observed them. I remember my youth with great fondness. Except for certain aspects of aging, I don't mind being my age...I'm glad I was a kid at the time of the Mickey Mouse Club,Davy Crockett and Ike. I was a teen for the Beatles...I saw them in 1964..first American concert...fourth row!!!! Now a days I see no rules...only rudeness...much of the time on this silly site. I rambled...sorry,friend.

Its an old custom who has gone down the drain. Probably some
prissy etiquette person made that up in the 50's.
Thank God we can wear white now year round instead of having
to listen to some silly designer.

You can wear white any time. Of course in winter, you may be like the invisible man, but there is no laws that says so

that used to be the way it was in the 50's and maybe into the 60's (the Cleavers, Nelsons, etc.) but not anymore...you can wear white anytime now. For instance in winter they call it "winter white".

It's just an outdated way of signaling that summer is over. Women no longer follow this fashion nonsense.
