Ever seen the Exorcism of Emily Rose? I think that's a pretty good interpretation of it. Satan, whom I'm reasonably sure exists, is like God. There's no proof of him, but there he is. The difference is that Satan was once known as Lucifer, and was one of the Lord's archangels. Story goes that he realised he might have the power to overthrow God, and rallied all the angels who believed in his cause. This was the War in Heaven. Over an age, Lucifer and his minions were defeated by the Seraphim (basically, super-angels with six wings) and the Archangel Michael, and were banished to hell.
Over history, there have been plenty of records of supposed signs, visions and interpretations of satanic forces. The devil's cross, for one, during an exorcism is not uncommon.
I dunno, it's really just open for debate. Personally I thnink there's good and evil in the world, and we just decide that some of the really evil things should be attributed to a universally evil force, named "Satan".

Well belief in Satan is based on the presupposition of the truth of Judeo-Christian mythology. If you accept that as truth then Satan is the fallen angel known as Lucifer. His anger towards us as God's most beloved creation is eternal. His strategy for revenge against god for casting him away is that he will use influence to turn humanity against its own creator. As an immortal entity he is not bound by the bonds of mortal capabilities and has abilities and intelligence far beyond our own. However he is a "being", not an impersonal force, and has conscious thoughts, ideas, and actions. Hope that helps

The big Satan is Iblees. He is a Jin and made up of fire like we are made up of clay. The there are many Jin followers of Iblees and all of them are called Satans. They are Jins. They share some physical characterstics with angels e.g. they can go to skies and assume shapes. The bad Jins or Satans have the power to put idea in your head and no more. So they can deceive human beings by putting bad ideas. It is the duty of human beings to reject all these ideas.
To know more about Iblees,Satan etc. read Quran

Satan is a Demon. He used to be an angel in Heaven. He wanted to rule his own world like Jesus and take over heaven, so Jesus told Satan to go rule his own world, its called Hell. This is where Adam and Eve come in. When you are an angel in heaven, and you turn bad, like Satan, and you can, you never know, you go to hell and become a Demon. Not everyone becomes a Demon though, you either believe in him, or you don't, you can change. The rules are tough though, once your in Hell, your in Hell, once your in Heaven you can change your mind, but once your with the Devil, your stuck, no turning back!

Honestly, truthfully... Satan is a personification of the loneliness that is felt when the soul longs for higher meaning or purpose. In Christianity, it is believed that the soul always yearns to be reunited with God. If this reunification is actively denied, then the soul begins to mourn the separation. This yearning is by definition Satan.

People tend to transfer or at least share their guilt with other people or other entities. For example, if a woman cheats her husband and she regrets it, she will eventually say it was Satan who tempted her to do it. Satan is the absolute icon to be blamed when people do bad things.

Straight from the bible, on who he was, how he was created, who he is now and what he is doing (deceiving the entire world) and about his future:
This is what the bible says about Satan, when he was expelled from heaven (it's interesting)
Book of Ezequiel ch 28:v 12
12 "You were the perfection of wisdom and beauty. 13You were in Eden, the garden of God. Your clothing was adorned with every precious stone: red carnelian, chrysolite, white moonstone, beryl, onyx, jasper, sapphire, turquoise, and emerald--all beautifully crafted for you and set in the finest gold. They were given to you on the day you were created.
14. ordained and anointed you as the mighty angelic guardian.[b] You had access to the holy mountain of God and walked among the stones of fire.
15"You were blameless in all you did from the day you were created until the day evil was found in you.(pride, rebelliousness) 16-Your great wealth filled you with violence, and you sinned. So I banished you from the mountain of God. I expelled you, O mighty guardian, from your place among the stones of fire.
17-Your heart was filled with pride because of all your beauty. You corrupted your wisdom for the sake of your splendor. So I threw you to the earth and exposed you to the curious gaze of kings. 18.You defiled your sanctuaries with your many sins and your dishonest trade. So I brought fire from within you, and it consumed you. I let it burn you to ashes on the ground in the sight of all who were watching. 19.All who knew you are appalled (other angels) at your fate. You have come to a terrible end, and you will be no more."

You see religion is a metaphorical account of the times past. There is no such thing as hooved man with horns. He was described as being such because Lucifer was not a nice person. I could say more, but this sums it up.
