It is possible to make money with your poetry, but you're ging to have to be willing to spend time promoting it and having a good PR.

Public relations is very important if you want to get anything sold. If you appear to be shy or unresponsive to questions people ask you at readings or contests about your writing it will make them apprehensive about buying your book.

If you have a website (or if you make one) include a guestbook or a forum or somewhere where people can ask questions and comment on your poetry. It's a good way to get to know who and where your audience is coming from. Go do readings at whatever writing cons are in your area. Get a booth at book fairs and promote your book. Go to bookstores and talk to the owners about maybe displying some of your stuff in their window or on the counter.

Of course, you can't expect to start making money immediately, and remember that word of mouth is your best friend. If someone likes your poetry and tells one of their friends (more likely, all of them) and those friends tell other friends, pretty soon a lot of people know about your writing.

Authors who aren't in the public eye generally are expected to behave a lot better than those who are famous. It's one of life's little ironies.

And I wish you luck in this endevor to get more readership of your poetry.

Convince the public to read poetry? Unfortunately, most poets don't make much money. Do you have a book? If not then that's the next step. Then, get a web page (with link to sell book), get book reviewed, and do lots of readings. Also winning contests doesn't hurt (but expensive and a long shot for everyone!). Best of luck!

Mostly by the way your manager(if you have one) markets you. Or represents you. Marketing is a big factor when selling. For example, have an attractive cover to your book so people will be more compelled to your book. But this is all the job of your manager to give prudent advise as such. The placement of the books in the book stores plays a big factor. if your book is on display or not. Simple things like this slowly, but gradually get your name put out there. If you have any friends with a degree in marketing they can give you better advice than I can. Hope this helped.
