is being a fireman a worthwhile occupation?

I think it is worthwhile. It's a tough gig though - hard to get a position because their are so many of them. You have to be willing to move anywhere - to get a job. But you score great benefits.

My husband on the other hand thinks they are wanna' be tough guys that sit around all day waiting for a fire to break out (exception would be disasters like 9/11)... and
that they should have been kept as volunteer status (that's how the fire departments first began). He will also cite for you that the majority of massive fires that occur, are created by firemen - because to keep their jobs and get more government funding they need to outspend their budgets, but if there are no fires... guess what! They loose jobs and money! Can't have that happen!

you would think that firefighters would be beyond reproach but judging from some of these answers - not so! Generally firefighters are held in high regard, make a good wage with a flexible schedule and good benefits. a little action and adventure on the side keeps boredom away. worthwhile - yes!

Ask anyone who has had a fire that question.I have to respect the courage of these professionals who risk their life daily for strangers.What steers these brave men and women into this profession? I have no idea, but thank God that they are there when needed.

well lets see the fact you dont get paid, indangering yourself with smoke and fire and oh yeah not knowing whether youll come home from work..... sounds "worthwhile" to me
