Sort of an accident really.
Wood shop class back in 8th grade, after a project I had a scrap of wood about the size of a 3 inch long pencil. One end was tapered in such a way that you could flip it up in the air like a Tiddlywink. We wound up spending our free minutes in class that term setting up basket targets at all heights and angles and flipping the stick into it.
How great was it? We handled it so much, it developed a smooth sheen from the oils off our fingertips. Later, my friend tried unsuccessfully to make his own ... after I declined his offer to give/sell it to him.
I wouldn't be surprised if I still have that stick in a drawer somewhere.

My Dad worked in a art supplies store and brought home some extra stuff they didn't need anymore. They were pads of paper which had a black border around them that was shaped to make them look like a TV screen. (This was in the early '90s when a lot of TV screens still curved at the corners.)
My sister and I took a cardboard box and cut a hole in it and drew some dials on it and made a remote control. Then with the TV screen paper we drew our own TV shows.
It was pretty cool and fun, but I do remember "creating" a TV show that was a blatant ripoff of Rainbow Brite. It even had a lame themesong, which, unfortunately, my sister still remembers.

When my girls were 2 and 5, I took a huge piece of cardboard and laid the girls down on the cardboard and traced around them to make giant paperdolls. I then told them to pick out their favorite outfit and dress their doll. Of course I had to help the 2 year old but that was fun for me. I made hair out of yarn and drew faces on them. This taught them to button and zip and to put on socks. This was the best homemade toy I ever made.

An X-wing fighter out of cardboard boxes for my son's birthday. It could hold 3 children so they all took turns being Jedis! Very cool. My boys painted the X-wing.
