All insects have their skeleton on the outside which provides support but also keeps fluids in. They also have various openings from which secretions come out. However tears are not one of those secretions.

Animals like us use tears to wash away dirt that gets in our eyes. Insects have compound eyes that are covered with a clear material called chitin. This material covers their whole body.

Insects' brains are small and they seem to use every bit of it trying to survive. While they are alert to danger and try to escape, they really don't seem to have emotions as we know them. Or at least we don't know how to tell if they are sad or not.

As humans we must take care not to project human qualities on to the other animals that exist in the world (that's called anthropomorphism). We should love them as they are for themselves. They are wonderful in their own way. To do so would encourage the mind set that those like us are better than those not like us.

Because of this people are encouraged to "save the whale or the Koala" but not the not-so-fuzzy creatures of the world. All creatures great and small are deserving of our respect regardless if they are like us or not

True story. I was sunning and dozing on the lawn one summer day in June. I opened my eyes and saw a black insect, much like a wasp, zip across my field of vision. Next I heard a high pitched scream, which sounded like "help" and saw two insects impact in the air and fall to the ground. There was a little pop to be heard on impact.

I went over and looked at the spot. The black wasp-like insect was dispatching a yellow wasp about the same size. I did find out that the black insect was a wasp killer; but I have never been able to explain the scream that took place just before the black killer struck.

My hearing is very acute and I can hear a high pitch dog whistle at levels other people can no longer hear. Maybe they cannot cry, but could they scream? I am often amused at the memory -- but then we'll never know will we?

If you mean tears and the whole bit, then I'd say no! Insect anatomy is WAY different than mammals'. An insect's eye is different and varies among insects, but they don't have a tear duct.

Scientists have discovered a surprising new insect breathing mechanism that is analogous to lung ventilation in humans.

Insects the most numerous and diverse group of animals don't have lungs. Instead, they have a system of internal tubes called tracheae that are known to exchange oxygen through slow, passive mechanisms, including diffusion. But this study demonstrates that beetles, crickets, ants, butterflies, cockroaches, dragonflies and other insects also use rapid cycles of tracheal compression and expansion in their head and thorax to breath.

NO.. IT CAN'T CRY..

Well, they have a determination to live, so they might have a fear of death. I killed an ant on the carpet and later saw another ant attempting to carry it off to somewhere. That could show some sort of 'feeling'. But do they cry? Probably not
