My little girl is going to be 1 year old in 3 weeks. She has recently started to go crazy when I change her diaper! She is fine while I wipe her, but as soon as the new diaper goes under her butt and I start to put on the vaseline all hell breaks loose. She arches her back, locks her legs and screams bloody murder! She cries so bad that sometimes she can't catch her breath She tries to roll over and get away - but I'm afraid to let her go around with no diaper on. I don't want her peeing all over the house! I feel so bad because I lose my temper and yell at her which makes everything worse. I try to hold her down to put the new diaper on, but it is next to impossible. Any advice??

My fiancee - her father is the only other person that has changed her in the past few months. I seriously doubt he would ever do anything to hurt her. She doesn't do this all of the time. Sometimes she'll lay there like an angel.

It's possible that she doesn't like how the diaper feels. Maybe it is uncomfortable on her. Are you using disposables? Maybe you should switch to cloth and see how she likes those.
Cloth is so much more comfortable than disposables, they aren't itchy and scratchy and you won't be putting all that plastic, paper and chemicals against your baby's skin. The cloth is softer too.
I know it means more laundry but after all it is your baby's health and comfort not your convenience that you should be thiniking of.
Good luck.

Do you have to use vaseline all the time? Does she have a rash since you are using the vaseline? Could be she is sick of having that sticky icky stuff on her!
Start letting her sit on her potty during the day and when you are changing her diaper and if you just changed her from a wet diaper then it wont hurt to let her air dry for about 10-15mintues without a diaper.

My daughter at that age hated diaper changes. The moment I laid her down and tried to change her. I believe it has more to do with the age, at that age they want to be independent and here you are holding them down.
My dd did the arching of her back and screaming, she screamed because I was holding her down and she didn't want that. I use to think she was going to break her back by doing all that arching.
I used to lose my temper to, its hard I know, just try to keep yourself as calm as possible.
I would stop with the vaseline, if she doens't have a diaper rash there is no reason for it. Vaseline on your butt is going to be uncomfortable, even things like desitin (which is much better for diaper rashes) are uncomfortable on.
Hope it gets better for you

My 14 mth old throws a fit also.I let him run around w/out a diaper right after he gets out of the bath, because he always pees in tub,i give him a toy to look at also while changing him and sometimes i have to put my leg around his chest just to put it on.Maybe she is ready to start trying the potty out.I put him on it once a day and he has come close a few times. As soon as i took him off of the potty he looked down at his self and peed on the floor. But that may be a sign that she wants to try.

Change the location, distract her by giving her a child safe sucker, tell her something that she can look forward to after her diaper is changed, but be sure you do it. Tell her ahead of time that you are going to change her and after that you will go for a walk if she doesn't screen and carry on. Have you asked her why she is screeming in a calm voice? I am thinking that something has happened for her to begin to behave this way. Are you the only one that is changing her diaper?

my son is 8mths old and he does the same thing. I just give him a toy or his pacifier and it usually helps. Sometimes it dosent. I think they get so mad bc they want to move and roll around and for that few min. you are forcing them to be still. Once his diaper is on and I let him loose he's just fine.

<> Why are you yelling at a baby? She doesn't understand. This could be one reason she acts the way she does, because you loose your temper. I suggest you take her to the doctor and discuss with the doctor about her reactions to being changed...

Gonna sound bad but you have to take control of the situation. You need to hold her down some way....place your legs on her shoulders to hold her down and sing to her. It works. OR better yet, you may be lucky and maybe she will want to start potty training. I recommend "The Potty Potty" video.

I don't want to scare you but if this is a recent problem and she doesn't have diaper rash or anything, Do you think anyone might be touching her.......If I was you I would take her to her pediatrician, explain to him the problem get your professional opinion.....
If this is her way of potty training it sure is weird!!!!
