We just bought a laptop, and are not sure about this whole wireless internet thing. First off, we will be living in a motel for the next few months, which doesnt have wireless internet.
1. Can we still get it there and how much does it usually cost?
2.Will we need to buy anything extra for it to work, besides a service?

ok here is the thing...

wi-fi cards are only a receptor for a signal that is being transmitted by either:

a wireless router that is connected to a modem

to a wi-fi signal for which you will pay a monthly service e.i. "T-mobile", "Verizon", "Earthlink" etc.

the first one, is the kind that many Hotels have when they advertise "Free Wi-Fi" and if they don't have it YOU WILL NOT have internet trough your wireless card, unless is able to receive a signal from an office building nearby or a house that has a wireless router... within 150-300ft from where your laptop is located.

The second one is a different kind of card... it has a little antenna sticking out from it and connects to the internet trough the cellular phone services, and is not free, here in TX, cost about $20 to get that service... but the card is about $100... while ther fisrt card is about $50 and on most of the new laptops lately, they come with one already built in

why don't you stay at a motel that has free wifi? is a lot of fun.

the chances of you getting wireless internet in a motel that doesnt offer it is next to none since it requires a phone line or a cable line. theres no way a motel is going to let you internet enable 1 room.

the only option i see available for you is to use the local library's wireless free connection. find a local number you can dial into through your motel room phone.

you may be stuck with dialup :( i dont see a motel management let you set up some sort of broadband service for just your room.

Wireless connection need one access point (wireless router) and one wireless network adapter. Wireless router connect to internet via modem (cable or ADSL) and wireless network adapter is any kind of PCMCIA card, USB adapter or built in Wi-Fi in laptop.
You need to ask Motel manager that what internet services are offering in rooms. Most hotel rooms are installed with Ethernet LAN sockets that you don't need to set up wireless connection there.

perhaps the router is desperate to basically enable particular IPs to connect, or the computing device's settings for the on the spot connection are incorrect someplace. If the IP, Default Gateway, etc are waiting to computerized then it would desire to artwork. If it does not, try putting it to comparable settings to a various computing device on the community that does artwork. i could wager that it fairly is probably some thing set with the router. in the event that they have encryption enabled, be certain they have the main appropriate key set, in any different case it would declare that it fairly is linked even whilst it fairly is not.

Yes, is does not cost any money*
If your computer were built-in wifi. you don't have to buy anything extra.

* if you have the line service username and password. sometimes it is free internet that doesn't required any username and password.
