I doubt you want a serious answer but here goes.
Myspace is part of the upheaval of the web and it's shift to data base use as a service. Rather than downloading software, the content is on the site and the site updates on it's own. Google, ebay, amazon are all like this.
Myspace didn't work but it showed a huge need for people to connect and communicate about their interests. At one point 20,000 new members a day.
But it ultimately fails in that while they did offer 'linked interests' and IM, what they failed at was not being able to profile users (like eharmony) so that you could combine the data and find others of similar interests. Just finding someone else who likes John Mayer won't cut it.
So, the obsession comes from a huge need. Our neighbors don't understand us and we all don't work at the same factory anymore.
Peace.

Maybe you can't sign on right now because the website is going under some changes and will be down for a certain amount of time. By the way, I'm assuming your one of those "obsessed" myspace people since you posted a question regarding your log in difficulties.

you have to register and create an account in order to get the full potential of the site.
myspace is appealing because its a great place to expand your social circle, you can blog and even has an IM. its the new place for people to virtually hang out. The same craze happened when chat rooms came out as well as instant messengers.
its a great place for you to hook up with old friends, classmates or people you have lost contact with. everyone is on myspace.

Someone maybe using Block For Parents on your computer.
It will keep you from going anywhere on myspace. There is no good way around it as it passwords the Hosts file and also send an email to the installer if you even TRY to edit the hosts file.
