To be able to answer this question, you first must define "civilized".... (1. having an advanced or humane culture, society, etc.) I believe that we have come a very long way with advancements in tecnology and therefore have made our society much more fast paced, which has in turn made our culture harsh and unable to share a quick moment with eachother. I wasn't around back then either, but I think that those years were a better time to live. When you could trust your neighbors and you could go to the local grocery store and get some milk... even if you didn't have enough money. People cared about other people and their well being. We have become a selfish and uncaring society for the most part. There are still people out there that wil give to others... even if it means they do without.

Parvez,
There are more democracies in the world now. Generally, this form of government treats its citizens better than other older forms of rule. So in that respect - yes, the world is more civilized. Keep in mind, that the concept of democratic ruled countries is only a few hundred years old. This is very new in the time frame of world history.

More civilized? We have more advanced technology, better medicines and medical capabilities. People are living longer (good or bad?) and CDs beat 8 track players hands down.
But....we seem to have more violence, wars, nuclear capable countries and AIDS.
Heck I just spent the last 18 months in Iraq...I may not be the best person to answer that question.

Worse in some ways. I did not really live in those past times, so I can not be sure, but to hear older people talk, it sure was better then.

Worse, because we have less water and nature, and we do alot of experimentation of all kinds, and that afect all the animals and the human being.
