hi what the odometer does is measure the miles on the car. for example if the car has been driven 120,000 miles so far in its life it will show 120,000 miles on the odometer. where as the tripmeter you can reset usually by holding in the lever next to it for a few seconds. (on some cars you pull on it.) this you can use to see like how far it is from one place to the other. i good thing i use it for is to see what my cars get for gas mileage. when you fill up yor tank reset your tripmeter so it goes back to zero. then drive your car till its on empty!(but dont run your car out of gas) when your at empty check your tripmeter. divide the gallons of gas your tank holds by the mileage and this will tell you what your car gets for miles per gallons. for example i have a 1989 ford t.bird super coupe with a 13gallon tank she will go 300 miles before being on empty. so on average i get about 23miles to the gallon. hope this info was helpful!! if you have any more auto related questions fell free to e-mail me at birdman89@verizon.net

odometer reads the overall milage on the car and the trip meter just shows how far you've gone in so long and you can reset a tripmeter

Odometer is the factory original mileage counter that can't be change or set back to zero without tampering with the transmission while trip meters can be re-set per trip via push button on dash or screw types.
