None of those. First of all, IBM quit making laptops. (they sold it, and the new Thinkpad stinks). HP and Compaq are OK. Watch out for Exploding batteries with Dell. (They recently recalled 4.5 million defective batteries... Good move Michael).
I highly recommend Toshiba. They are available at several retail stores, as well as many on-line locations. But I recommend picking one out IN PERSON. You see, you have to see the screen size, keyboard layout, weight and other things about the laptop. Costco is an excellent place to buy it, since their return policy is totally hassle free.

I think this varies from time to time, as new laptop models seem to come out every few minutes. Consumer Reports recently rated all of the laptop manufacturers in their article (September 2006 issue) within a few points of each other on overall brand reliability.
I recently got an HP dv5130us, which was nice--for three days. It quit working, and I replaced it with one I bought directly from HP. So far, so good; this dv5000z is a very nice computer.
About 2½ years ago, I bought a Toshiba Satellite A35. It was a good computer in its first few months. Then one of the touchpad "mouse buttons" went bad. It was under warranty, I sent it to Toshiba for repair, and I had it back a few days later. The other button gave trouble, so I "fixed" it by using an external mouse full time. After the warranty expired, I began having sound problems. Recently, the modem has failed. This is far too much trouble for a 2½ year old computer. Something to consider with Toshiba is that TOSHIBA DOES NOT PROVIDE ANY SERVICE for an out-of-warranty laptop, even for a price. The only Toshiba authorized service provider within 250 miles of my home is about a 1½ hour drive, and they have a month backlog before they can even look at it. I took it to a local repair shop (not Toshiba "authorized"), and he said he could repair it, but Toshiba will not sell him the parts. I am now in a position that I may have to scrap what was a nice laptop. Toshiba's customer support said, basically, that there is nothing they can do. For this reason, I shall not buy another Toshiba product, no matter how good it might be otherwise.
All that being said, consider what the manufacturer can offer in terms of service, both warranty and out-of-warranty. Also, find out what their repair network is like, particularly if you do not live in a major US city.

Mac. they are going to be as much as this element plenty longer than your regular desktops. for occasion Firewire became applied 10 years in the past into Macs an it rather is barely now that some desktops are alongside with them. And why could you want a working laptop or computing device that basically rather helps a million OS. this might desire to be a no-brainer. Run all or any OS as i will and you wont be apologetic approximately it. Now in case you like it for gaming you may nicely be extra suited off with a notebook. for college a Mac, you will adore it!

If your like me and don't take very good care of your stuff, I would suggest a Dell. Mine has been to hell and back and has had no problems. I have the Inspiron 700m which is smaller, but worth the $$.
