my speedometer and gas gauge are all out of whack since I turned off and on my lamp light indicator. (My dashboard light indicator said "lamp off" when my headlights were on and working.) I flicked the lights off and on thinking maybe that would shut the light indicator off since they were working just fine, but it was dark and that light was annoying staying on inside the car while I'm driving.

Right after that, my oil light came on, my speedometer registered 25 miles faster than what I was going and my gas gauge said I had 57 gallons of gas when my car only holds 20! (and I know it had only 7 gallons in there before it went crazy)

I put in oil, now there's too much. Can too much oil and turning off and on headlights make the gauges malfunction?

Can anyone tell me where the wire may be to check if it's just a loose wire?

I have a 1988 Mercury Ford Cougar.

Thank you for your time and help if you can help with an answer. :)

Okie dokie... Most likely your instrument cluster went bad. I saw it on an F250 just this week.
As far as the oil goes, if you have too much, it can cause aeration, which is not a good think. So I'd recommend draining that out as well.
I highly suggest going to a dealer for this. This isn't just a quick scan a code problem. This may require quite a bit of diagnostics. But, if you get the right tech... it'll be diag'd and fixed in no time.

It sounds like a problem with the display, and not with each of the individual components. Adding too much oil is not a good thing, but it couldn't affect any of this. The "lamp off" indicators could also be another symptom of a faulty display.

P.S. Does this car have the separate display for oil changes, etc., like the Ford Thunderbird?

to much oil is no good for the car
souds like an electrical short, maybe in a relay switch. go to a place that checks electrical problems. don't bring it to a gas station as they aren't experts and it will cost you a fortune

the first thing to look for are all the ground straps under the hood, also the ground cable on the battery and the body ground from the cable to the fender well. clean and or repair these first to be sure you are not "hunting " for ground. if that dosen't do it, you need to take it to a good shop.
