You connect to an outlet to clear the hard drive. To update you connect to i-Tunes on your computer.

Make sure you fit the cable jack properly into the ipod F connector under your ipod. Some times it may be wrongly placed so don't force it just move it till you find the right spot and connect it. If you are missing the DC power socket then you need to buy it from Ipod accessories shop or on websites that sells them.

If you cannot connect it to a PC then you cannot update it.

my ipod connects to my mac with a usb plug. it charges that way. i can even download more songs while it charges.
