We are trying to remodel our guest bathroom and took out the tile from our shower. Now we were told it needs to be hot mopped. Is this something we can do ourselves? If not, what should I expect to pay to have this done?

That's exactly what it is, tar mopped on the shower pan floor. It puts a barrier between the foundation.

That's old technology. Use a heavy rubber/vinyl membrane made for this purpose. Buy it in Home Depot and the drain that goes with the use of a membrane.
Much better and WATERTIGHT.

u would be better off to take out this outdated pan and install the newer ones that r made in place, its a poly membrane.....then use mortar over it and mold it toward the drain......creates a good job..
