Once they have a picture from the helicopter, they should back off until the car stops and send the nearest officers to follow through. It would be safer, however, there are times when it is necessary to save unwilling passengers, hostages, children that have been carjacked, to chase them down and do your best. I think people should be more aware of the emergency lights and pull over to the right and shoulder lanes until it has passed them by, then there would not be so many innocents wrecked during chases.

I've never thought about it until now, but now that you mention it...I think they are sometimes necessary (but at other times I think the police do overreact a bit). I don't understand why the person "runs" in the first place, they should realize that they will get caught--it's only a matter of time..and the police have backup--which is something they do not have. Unfortunately they have hurt some innocent people by pursuing vehicles, but it is something that has to be done at times-or else there will be a criminal roaming the streets (who may just likely never be found again)

Very dangerous and stupid. I don't why they have to do this in a first place. Can they just follow the culprit silently and wait for the right time to arrest them. Those sirens make criminals to panic more which can end up to a very dangerous situation for the common motorist. As much as possible, use the helicopter to follow these culprits and report the situation to the people from the ground. This will prevent any unnecessary pursuit that usually leads to unnecessary deaths and injuries.

For a fact, all high speed pursuits could be ended with a twofold approach.

1. Equip the police with EMP(electromagnetic pulse) devices that fry the control circuits of autos.
2. Pass a law that gives the police authority to shoot to kill anyone who flees in an automobile.( Because the act of fleeing is in fact attempted murder on any one who happens to be in the path of the felons that flee).

They put so many peoples lives in danger by having high speed chases. Not too long ago there was a guy that was stopped for driving on e suspended license and he fled and the chase ended with the guy and a few innocent people dying. I wish they could just let some things go instead of inocent people getting hurt in their path.

I think if done safely over a short distance, they're ok..

Chases that happen through a crowded city are probably not so good...

I guess it depends on the severity of the offense the perp..is getting chased for...

For MURDER ....... yeah.. hunte'm down
For Missing a Stop Sign... probably get close enough to get a tag..then follow up with a visit later...

Is whatever the person stealing or doing worth risking the lives of SO many ? They wouldn't even be high speed if it wasn't for the police involment . Be sneeky catch em' when they least expect it.

I think they put other drivers on the road in danger! Especially when police chase criminals for stupid reasons, when they could get their plate number & go to their house later & arrest them (safely). Cops can overdo it sometimes.

They are a necessary evil to catch the bad guy. Unfortunately, innocent people are injured, killed, and have property destroyed in an effort to arrest the suspect.

I think they are ridiculous. They tend to broadcast them on all the local channels and cut programming and no one really cares anyway. I think the police could stop them sooner, but they let them drag on.
