There are a few out there, but it just depends on what you're looking for. All of the ones I've listed are free to play, and I'll be sure to include if you have to download a client or not.
MapleStory is a cute little MMO. All the characters have a cute little anime-like appearance, and the world is very colorful and bright. You can party with other people online, trade, explore, and do quests. There's even a Cash Shop where you can buy (with real money) coupons to change your hairstyle and color, clothing for your character, and special items. You'll have to download the client for this game, but it shouldn't take too long.
Silkroad Online is a game based on the "Silkroad:" the trade between ancient China and Europe. Unfortunately, I didn't get to play too far into this game, but I was impressed by what I did see. The graphics are decent, and your character will have the ability to gain skills, spells, and pets. There is also an "Item Mall" in this game, where you can pay real money for certain items, but it's not a requirement. There is a client to download for this game.
Knight Online is similar to Silkroad, except the character creation is slightly more limited. You can choose between two different races, and those races have certain classes you can choose from. Again, there's a shop in the game where you can use real money to purchase items, and there is a client you'll need to download.
Adventure Quest and Dragon Fable are pretty similar (they're made by the same developers). They're browser-based games where you can create a character and do quests to earn in-game money and items. I believe there are also items you can purchase with real money. There's no client download for these games at all, which makes them all the better if you're not at your personal computer.
Puzzle Pirates probably isn't quite the style you're looking for, but it's still pretty interesting. You create your own pirate either on a paying server or "free" server (this may have changed now, as I haven't played for over a year), and you basically play games in order to make money. There is a client to download, but there really isn't a whole lot of variety in games, from what I remember.
And last, but not least, there's Runescape. I'm sure you've heard about this game many times over, so I won't go into too much detail about it. There is no client to download, so again, if you're away from your personal computer, it's pretty ideal. I didn't care for it much myself, since there are plenty of better games out there.
There are other games out there that I haven't listed here. If you're interested in others, you can always do a Google search for free online games, or you can check out the websites of the game developers I've listed (I know Knight Online has a couple of other free-to-play games).
I hope this helped a bit, and good luck with your search.
