I have taken Neurontin since 1998 for bipolar. I also have back pain and leg pain and my spine doc said its a great med.

It was originally used for epilepsy, but now used for other things...pain being one of them. Its a mood stabilizer, corrects the chemicals in the brain. Its good for the nerves so this is why they use it for pain.

The nice thing about neurontin is its a nuetral drug, no weight gain, and no weight loss. It makes me feel better as far as my moods go.

I had a car wreck and had back surgery and live with chronic pain.....I cant tell that the neurontin helps with my pain AT ALL.

OMG, all these other answers are killing me...LOL Everyone is different, so you wont know till you try it.....Good luck

It will help your back but you will most likely feel like a space cadet for the first 4 or 5 days until you get used to it. It takes a little time to work, and do NOT self regulate the medicine. Take it as prescribed, but it helps to coat nerve endings and lessen your pain.

Just for the record, Neurontin is prescribed for ANYTHING to do with nerve damage. For Alzheimers patients, it heals the white matter nerve endings and re-builds the missing myelin in their brain where the synapse connections are, and neurons fire. In seizure patients it helps repair nerves in the brain, in spinal injuries it repairs nerve endings (your spine is full of them), and in shingles patients it helps repair nerve endings because shingles break out at the site of nerve endings from a dormant chicken pox virus in your spine, so yes....neurontin IS used for more than just one thing.

A drug that is making the drug companies very rich because it seems to be given out for just about everything, especially for idiopathic (cause unknown) conditions. It's like, when doctors are clueless as to what to do, they give their patient Neurontin. Truth is, no one even knows how it works or what it actually does in the system and it effects people very differently based on their individual chemistry.

What is gabapentin?

Gabapentin affects chemicals and nerves in the body that are involved in the cause of seizures and some types of pain. The exact way that it works is unknown.

Gabapentin (neurontin) is used with other drugs in the treatment of some types of seizures and for the management of postherpetic neuralgia (nerve pain caused by the herpes virus or shingles).

Gabapentin may also be used for purposes other than those listed.

If you experience any of the following serious side effects, stop taking gabapentin and seek medical attention or contact your doctor immediately:

* an allergic reaction (difficulty breathing; closing of the throat; swelling of the lips, tongue, or face; or hives).

Other, less serious side effects may be more likely to occur. Continue to take gabapentin and talk to your doctor if you experience

* dizziness, poor coordination, or drowsiness;
* blurred or double vision;
* irregular back-and- forth movements of the eyes;
* nausea and vomiting; or
* tremor.

Hope it helps

Neurontin is brand name for gabapentin. Used for nerve pain like in shingles. Seizure and also as a mood stabilizer (probably ineffective but prescribed nonetheless.) This is the short answer, anything in particular you want to about gabapentin?

I think that gaba is a good drug which need lot of researches about the metabolics reduals. It can also be understood that it is having poly effects over several systems of the body.definitely this drug retards the frequency of the convolutions. in addition this drug reduces the aggresive behaviourin the mentally retarded persons,especially those in the age groups 22 to 26.During the course of tratment proper titration of this drug to match all the parameters of the individuals physiology.During the period of treatment some troubles at the junction of the throat is possible,by then reduce the dose gradually. Products in 50 mg, and 200 mg should be launched ,then only trust over this medicine could be conserved.

neruontin this drug has been prescribe for all kinds of problems and guess what there is no real evidence that helps anything this drug is a GABA neurotransmitter enhancer and who needs to have more GABA in there system uh maybe epileptics people that suffer from epilepsy other than that it becomes a muscle relaxer and if you don't want to be sleepy all day and in la la land and get side effects from it like blur vision weigh gain and watch you re life go by none productive. My honest opinion Nerontin is a useless medicine push by drug company's that gives incentives to doctors to prescribe it
