No, they won't charge you. They have no way of charging you! They will hold it for a while and then give your table away eventually. I recommend Bomas at the Animal Kingdom Lodge, Spirit of Aloha Dinner Show at the Polynesian, Kona Cafe at the Polynesian, 50's Prime Time Cafe at Disney MGM Studios, and Narcoosees at the Grand Floridian... off the Disney Dining List.

For most of the dinner reservations you would make, there is no fee if you miss them. I am not sure about things like the dinner shows, though.
If you make tour reservations, I think that they will charge you unless you give more than 24 hour notice. (I am going in 2 weeks and made reservations for the Segway tour at Epcot, and that is what they told me.)
If you are using the Disney Dining plan, you wouldn't be charged. (we used it last year, and are using it this year also.)
In 2004, we even had reservations for a Character meal, and we didn't make it. No charge.
You can pretty much make reservations from the concierge desk (guest services) on the day that you want. You may not get the best time, but they will let you in. Last year, we went (4 adults) and my niece showed up on the last minute (making it 5 adults) we were able to change every reservation we had to include the extra person. She was even able to get a ticket to the Spirit of Aloha dinner show!
Go, and have a Magical Vacation!!

It depends what you book. The best thing to do is ask your travel agent or ask when you call Disney. They will let you know all the details about your reservations. Some will require a credit card in order to hold it, others won't. Some of them you actually have to call and cancel within a certain amount of time of the reservation or you will be charged for the meal. Some don't require you to cancel the reservation at all.
You definitely want to book your dinings. A lot of dates are already sold for the next couple of months, so you want to plan ahead. I took a last minute trip to Disney a couple of days ago and didn't have time to reserve the meals. When I got there, I basically couldn't get in any of the restaurants because nothing was available. The dining plan is great, but it is very popular, so it is hard to get into places without reservations.

It states on the Walt Disney World website that if you don't cancel within a certain amount of time, like 24 or 48 hours in advance, there may be a charge. I know what you mean about not being able to make it, though. My boyfriend and I got back from WDW three weeks ago, and I made reservations for almost every meal. We missed at least 6 of our reservations, probably more, because a lot of the places we wanted to eat at were at different Resorts, and it takes a long time to get to them because you have to take transportation to a Park, then to the Resort you want. Of course, we never missed our reservations, we just pretty much skipped them. We had reservations for the Cape May Cafe Dinner Buffet and were about an hour and a half late. The place was extremely busy, but they got us in almost immediately. It was great. You'll be fine for your reservations if you're late, but if you do decide to skip them, that's fine, too. We never called to cancel, just skipped, and there were no charges to our bill at the end of our stay.
lol That's so funny, though. You sound just like us. Like, if you're at the Park and you realize "Wow, we have dinner reservations in an hour, but I'd really like to change and wash-up if we go out to eat. But that'll take a while and I don't want to just show up late. Sooo... I guess we'll just skip." lol It's the best way to deal with it. Especially since, of course, you THINK you have plenty of time for anything when you're on vacation at Walt Disney World, but you really never do.

Some places will charge you if you do not cancel within 24 hours. They are pretty lax about this but with certain restaurants such as The California Grill in The Contemporary Resort on most occasions they will charge because the waiting list is so long. For a lot of the character dining they will also charge because people put their names down months ahead of schedue to get in.

No they do not charge if you cancel. If you do decide to cancel at least call so other people can get it. You can call from your room or a guest relations area. Or if your near the restaurant just stop in and let them know. Its a nice thing to do because if a lot of people are trying to get in, and that opens up a table for them. Also try making several reservations at once, like under your first name and the other people your going with so you have a choice. For example put one reservation for dinner at like 5 under your name at one place and another one at like 5:15 under the other persons name so you can chose and cancel the one you don't want. My mom and I always do that, ill put one under my name, one under my sisters and one under my moms, pick the one we want and cancel the others. That way we have a guaranteed seat some where!! Have fun!! And don't worry if you forget to call and cancel it wont charge anything!

I had a problem with Disney, I purchased a ticket and then it didn't arrive in the mail, and so, I didn't get to go on the day that I purchased the ticket for. I called them and said I want my money back and they said that they don't do that, but in the end of a long fued, they gave me my refund, the whole thing, so they don't charge for cancelling it, but they don't give your money back either
