I'm really quite curious, because a lot of great games are seen as mediocre or just plain bad, based on nothing but graphics.

ok, i definately see the point of actually attacking the opponent being a plus. in the lufia games, great as they were, in fights, the monsters and characters just ...shook, and damage numbers were displayed.

I honestly wish I knew. It seems people who see the beauty in games based on storylines and characters, and not on impressive graphics, are becoming few and far between.

Part of James' answer got me thinking a little bit, and I came to the conclusion that it's just another example of the "generation gap," or something similar.

It's as if no one wants to use their imaginations anymore, and I think that has a lot to do with why gamers are demanding better graphics. I remember when Nintendo was first released, and I had absolutely no problem with using a bit of creativity and imagination when it came to playing video games. To me, I was a plumber who "spit" fireballs, on a mission to rescue a princess from an evil prehistoric reptile; or a valkyrie, dressed in red armor, navigating through an endless, dangerous dungeon.

Now, it just seems that technology is taking over, and no one has a need to use their imaginations anymore; the technology does the thinking for them. It's a little sad, really. If a game now has the graphics those people are looking for, that's pretty much the end of it.

Also, people are lazy. They don't want to take the time to get to know the characters, or remember details of a story.

A perfect example of this is Final Fantasy VII. With the releases of Advent Children, Dirge of Cerberus, and (possibly, not entirely sure) the remake of Final Fantasy VII, it's becoming more popular that it ever was before. Why? Because people are drawn to the graphics, and nothing more (I will give some people the benefit of the doubt here, though; FF7 was a pretty intense game).

I could go on, but then I probably wouldn't stop.

well if u know the game world of warcraft it has amazing graphics, now imagine if the graphics were like runescape's graphics,...not so cool is it?
it is also important because rpg means role playing game which means u play a person like real life so the people that make the rpgs have to make it look as real as possilbe.
