Both are carrying the same weight (in this example). Both are self inflicted. Both are concerned with how tired they are while standing. Standing doesn't effect the baby.

People view the pregnant lady as deserving of help and the obese lady as undeserving. Pregnancy is thought of as something wonderful, healthy, and positive. Also, a lot of women have children.
Obesity is unhealthy and not positive. Weight is usually something people can control or do something about. People assume that obese people are lazy, have a lack of self-control and are eating themselves to death.

A pregnant lady is carrying a child, that is a great thing to do, but quite tiring. Once she has the baby she will hopefully regain her normal weight. An obese person is doing long-term damage to his/her body because of indulgence and should not be rewarded by being given a seat by someone else.

Good question. Both may be self inflicted but the issue is about self control. The pregnant women will only stay that way for nine months...she is bringing a child onto this earth....she deserves a little courtesy for those few months. The obese women shows nothing but downright laziness and lack of will power. Maybe she shouldn't even be riding the train at all and hop on that bicycle. That's why its more socially acceptable.

Pregnant women have a lot to deal with. They have to carry a child for nine months. They deserve something as little as getting a train seat for bringing a child into this world. As for the obese lady, well... I guess people just don't accept her.

you do sound like a male chauvinist dont you. a pregnant woman is carrying an unborn but living baby in her womb.if the bus jerked or had to come to a sudden stop she could fall and harm or even lose the baby.could you live with that knowing u hadnt offered her a seat.as for it being self inflicted thats stupid.did anyone say that to your mother when she was carrying you. you dont seem to have any manners luv. pity the poor girl who gets lumbered with you.take it you dont want to have any kids then. just as well eh!!

Because an obese woman has got herself in that state through gluttony and laziness (probably not a politically correct answer, but an honest one!)
A pregnant woman is carrying an unborn child... she will be tired and heavy and it will be uncomfortable and maybe unsafe for her to stand for long periods at a time... and also for her to be thrown about the carriage when the train stops, etc.
A pregnant woman is carrying a child that a man also chose to create...... you should be kind and considerate to them.
I personally will always give up my seat for a pregnant lady, but would have second thoughts about giving it to a fat lady.
Why should i give a fat lady my seat? The exercise of her standing up and having to hang on to the railings will probably be good exercise for her and give her second thoughts next time she reaches for that cake.
Remember, your mom was pregnant with you once and i hope people treated her kindly then.

I guess it's because society has a very strong opinion on overweight people. Personally myself I dont judge, and pregnant ladies don't always get the chance to sit down, it depends on the general public and manners. You can only generalise on this one.
Anyways some overweight people have medical reasons for being so you cant always say its self-inflicted

Both are not self inflicted ... apart from social attitude, where pregnant woman cares for a new life but the fat lady for her stomach there are more things to consider , like...
Pregnant woman's body undergoes the changes rapidly during several months and the lower body is always vulnerable, where else the fat lady's body gets used to the weight during longer period.

no standing does not affect the baby but if the pregnant woman falls she can risk misscarrying and herself hemmoraging while an obese woman will just walk away with a few scrapes not to mention humilation. most pregnant woman can not tolarate standing as it can cause swelling in thier ankles and feet which is also dangerous for mom and baby

b/c people feel that the ones who are obesed can loose the weight however a pregnant woman has to wait 9 months to concieve a child. People aren't as nice and logical in thinking as they use to be. I saw a woman looking for a seat on a bus she wasn't nice looking, but had a baby and was obesed however NOONE and I mean no one offered her an empty seat next to them. It all goes back to people wondering why the world is going to hell? Well, start living your life for Christ...he would have done more then give up a seat.
