A hospital social worker does many things. One is to communicate a diagnosis between doctors and family members. Another is to do assessments and follow up on peoples medical health. They provide a lot of comfort to families of patients in the hospital by turning things from doctors language to understandable explanations. They also plan discharges and if a patient needs to be moved they find a new facility for them. These are a few of the many things a hospital social worker does.

My daughter just spent seven weeks in the hospital for a bone marrow transplant and her hospital social worker did many things for us. She helped us with any health insurance issues that we had. She contacted organizations to help with my finances until I could return to work. She got in contact with the Make a Wish foundation so that my daughter could qualify for a Wish. She basically made sure that our hospital stay was as comfortable as possible as well as our lives outside of the hospital. She was always very busy, but would make time to check on us. I would assume that hospital social workers also look out for the safety of the patients to make sure it is safe for them to go home. ( Ex. Domestic or Child Abuse Situations) Hospital Social workers surely make things easier on the patients and their families.

Hospital social workers help the uninsured obtain emergency Medicaid financing. They liaison between the hospital and nursing home placements, as needed. They may do counseling, if they have the licensing. They are usually on the run, all day, because of the high turnover in patients.

In some hospitals they're also charged with investigating any child abuse claims reported by doctors. though some hospitals have separate investigators for this who do nothing else.
