i want to use 1by4s nailed to furing strips. i want the look of a old porch, so i need to stager them, the ceil is cracked now. i plan on going over this, with treat wood, then paint. do i go with say 10 ft then 5ft, i'am doing this myself so i don't want to get to big.

Well if you go with true T&G then chances are when you buy it you'll get it in random legnths so you'll have to watch how it matches.When you start use the tounge side to the wall this way when you finsh you can rip the tounge side off.e-mail if i can help you out more..

Depending on how the rafters run will dictate how you "should" install the ceiling. The T & G needs to be exactly perpendicular to the rafters,,,and before you nail the first piece you better measure twice before cutting once, to assure it's square. If it isn't allow room at the edges all around for a molding to cover any odd measure.

Staggering will be simple enough as long as you butt the cut ends centered on any rafter.

In your final course, or the one just before it, if you don't have space all around, you'll probably want to not secure the next to last course tight before fitting the final.
