A "bar" in this case is Kentucky slang for bear. This is one of the tall tales told about Davey Crockett. He did start hunting at an early age, but I doubt very much that he went bear hunting that early.
I love your misunderstanding, though. Never connected Davey Crockett (who died at the Alamo) with Prohibition. Wrong century.

legends die hard as people make up fictional events. David Crockett was from Tennessee and yes he went to congress. He was defeated then went to Texas and was killed at the Alamo in 1836.
