I recall seeing Popeye sniff garlic when he didn't have spinach to eat. Does anyone recall seeing this in the old popeye cartoons?

When popeye was first created, the substance he used was garlic -- eaten, though, not sniffed. The garlic rated poorly among parents, however, because of the odor. Spinach, thought then to be just as healthy as garlic, and by far more commonly found on the dinner tables at that time, replaced it.

No, I don't recall Popeye sniffing garlic. I only knew he ate spinach from a can (blech!)

This was a question in a trivia game on a cruise ship. and the answer was garlic. I was really surprised. I guess i was too young for those episodes LOL!

I remember the episode in which he was sniffing coke or some other drug. That was making him hyper and not the spinach.
