Lise Meitner discovered fission, working under Otto Hahn at the Kaiser Wilhelm Institue. Hahn got all the credit until a few years ago.

Enrico Fermi executed the first sustained chain reaction at University of Chicago in 1939.

I think Leo Szilard, old-time close friend of Einstein was really the most critical person in realizing that it was possible, maybe, to build a bomb. Nobody, except Einstein, ever gave Szilard any respect, even though he was one of the smartest guys of the 20th century. Leo is the man who got scared that the Nazis might do it first. By contrast, everyone respected Einstein. Einstein was totally unconcerned intially, but was convinced by Leo Szilard to write the famous letter to FDR. FDR took it seriously and got the Manhattan project rolling under General Leslie Groves, who chose J. Robert Oppenheimer to be the scientific administrator.

Enrico Fermi is credited with discovering the nuclear chain reaction, but the little-known Otto Hahn is responsible for the discovery of fission, and they both won a Nobel Prize for it

Robert Oppenheimer was probably the leading scientist on the American side actually involved with the development of the bomb

Szilard gave General Groves the theoretical basics, Groves hired Oppenheimer for his ability to manage a bunch of scientific primadonnas. So scientists working for Oppenheimer and Groves made various contributions, the sum of which went into the requirements of a working bomb.

Actually it wasn't any of the famous names others have listed here.

It was a young post graduate physics student from Europe. Unfortunately I've forgotten his name. But he met with Einstein while Einstein was on vacation at the beach and Einstein was surprised that he hadn't seen it himself. That is quite a compliment.

He got Einstein to compose the famous letter to President Roosevelt, in fact composed most of the letter for Einstein.

Yes, it was Leo Szilard.

it wasn't a person

certain people worked on the theoretical problem for many years

then, many people worked on the theoretical and application problems in a super concentrated effort called "the manhattan project"

many people contributed

eventually they had not only a bomb but the fundamental principles that have been applied to nuclear power generation
