A very good question..and yes I have befriended some so-called friends whom I thought would be there for me when the chips were down,but they always looked the other way and left me when I needed them most.This world is a cruel place sometimes and people are not close like they used to be.Sad but true,especially in families.Maybe it's the fast life we all live but we should at least take time to help a friend in need even tho they may never return the favor,we will be blessed in some way for our kindness.

I personally don't think it pays to look at friendship like that, you are setting yourself up for disappointment. It is not who is doing more or less in a relationship.. you do things because you want to and expect nothing back. Just like the person, be there and have no conditions on the friendship. Some people that are worth the while take a long time to get to know, as opposed to someone who comes on real strong and then disappears when there are problems to test the friendship. Everyone needs someone and sometimes what we think and worry about is the further-est thing from the truth. Don't burn your bridges, keep being a friend as long as they are a person you can trust. Trust is the big issue, let them know that you are there if they need you and give them space to breathe, anyone would appreciate that even if they did not say.
