after a certain point, it really had nowhere to go. there was already speed, thrash, hardcore, whatever. its actually the same with all rock, its becoming repetative due to a lack of originality and creativity. no one wants to rehash what's been done, yet everyone wants it to sound like it used to.
plus, i feel that, in general, musicianship has gone way downhill. most guitarists seem to only know 3 chords, drummers suck, and bassists lack inspiration. of course there are exceptions, i'm talking as a whole, in general.

REAL metal is "dead" but in true metal fashion it will rise again. Metal in the traditional sense has been pushed down by a deluge of shitty emo/alt rock bands. If Nickelback is called metal, than good riddance to it. The metal I know wouldn't be caught dead near the bands that are being called metal today.

Metal..Dead?...naww no way Metal will never die, Metal will go strong till the end of time, bc it is the one type of music that differenciates its self from all other music types, like pop bands these days they all sound the same everyones voice all sounds the same, and they all produce the same sorta music same melodys and what not, But metal, there are diff types of metal for instance, ill name a few, Death Metal,heavy Metal,Melodic Metal,Speed Metal hell eaven Neo-Classical-Metal. and with Pop...i can only name like one other genre of pop and thats pop Punk which sucks, so there u have it friend, Metal isnt dead and will never be Dead =]

Who the hell says metal is dead? metal is the one brand of music that will never die because will always need to rock out and let go.

metal ins't dead hun it just isn't mainstream anymore (thank god) check out your local bands and a few underground bands thats where the metal is.
go to myspace and search for metal music you will be surprised at how much and how good most of these bands are
a couple of good ones in my area are
KiND
sliverstone
shelflife
check them out on myspace
none are extreme metal or death metal but i myself am not into the extreme or death metal

I guess they are just running out of material to work with. Most the music today sounds rather gay wouldn't you agree. I find refuge by listening to Metallica or Black Sabbath

dont know i like bands like fall out boy, my chemical romance, 30 seconds to mars, and hawthorne heights.
