I used to buy very expensive men’s shirts ($150-$250 per) and had them dry cleaned rather than laundered because I was told they would last longer. I’ve started using a Hong Kong tailor who charges me $55 for the same quality shirts I used to buy from Neiman Marcus for 4X the price. I am wondering if it makes sense to pay the premium for having the shirts dry cleaned or to just have them laundered and replace the shirts more often?

Washing you clothes does dull and fade them over time, not to mention diminishing them (think dryer lint). If you use a good dry cleaners, then they should check them for spots before cleaning them, if that's even an issue. However, depending on what solvent is used to dry clean them, they may not smell as clean over time (months, not days or weeks). If you don't mind washing and replacing them as ofter, then skip the cost of dry cleaning. However, dry cleaning is almost always better for your clothes. If the condition and color of your clothes is important to you, and you want them to last much longer, stick with dry cleaning. Maybe do a cost analysis...would you rather pay X amount per week for cleaning, or replace X number of shirts at $X amount twice a year.

Try getting some laundered and some dry cleaned and see if you can tell the difference - I doubt it. Unless you are the kind of eater who gets his lunch all over his shirt you will never have a problem that is a challenge for a laundry. Keep the extra money and treat yourself to something.

I think it is still better to dry clean shirts over the $50 mark. Laundering can diminish the colour of the shirts, as I found out, the hard way.

But your best bet is to find a good dry cleaner and stick with them. The more you go to them, the better service gets as you become a loyal customer in their eyes.

But still stick to dry cleaning versus laundering.

Unless the fabric clearly says "Dry clean only", they usually get cleaner to wash them instead.

Just use a good cleaners for washing and pressing. It will be a lot less expensive than dry cleaning I would think, then as you say just replace them as needed.

Send them out to be laundered and pressed. Can't beat it for nice shirts!

I wear my shirts once and then burn them.
