Contract for a professional exterminator who will give you a guarantee or get a Jack Russell Terrier! These dogs are great ratters and will catch and kill every rat in the place in very short order. Just be sure to pick up all of the rat poison first - it will kill the dog. These dogs can be problem pets for a family - much too hyper for most people - and can often be found at the animal shelters.

If you don't want to go to the trouble of keeping a dog full time, contact some Jack Russell breeders in your area and see if they know anyone who would bring their dogs to your business for a fee. (They are now called Parson Russell Terriers by the AKC.)

Find a good breeder referral by going to www.akc.org or talking to people at dog shows. http://www.akc.org/breeds/parson_russell_terrier/index.cfm

You can also find info about the breed clubs on the akc site - they probably have a rescue group where you can get an older dog for less money.

And you can find people with dachshunds and other terriers who do go-to-ground trials with their dogs. The AKC calls these events "Earthdog Trials" - this link will help you find Earthdog clubs in your state. Their members can help you out.

Try to find someone with a trained ferret and let them patrol the area around the premises at least every second day to start with. Unless your rats are very cheeky that should deter them, especially if the ferret manages to kill a few of them. Ferrets are usually good at sniffing out rat holes as well, and putting in rags soaked in paraffin should make them move out. But you should wait with that for a week or so, because ferrets don't like the smell either.

Keep everything clean. Do a visual check twice daily for rat faeces. Find out if your neighbours are causing this problem by being unhygienic and leaving things around. Get a pest control company to come and look at it. If you live in the UK, the local council usually has a department that deals with it. Act fast as it is a serious threat to your health and that of your staff. It's better to deal with it yourself as soon as you can than let someone report it to the authorities.

Eliminate any standing water or anywater for that matter. Get rid of any garbage or food around the basement area. If worst comes to worst, I had a freind do this in college, he left a dead rat in the basement for several days and disposed in later. By then the rats found another area to infest and never returned. Something about repelling their own scent, works the same with sharks i think.

There are sonar devices you can buy that you plug in to an electric socket. They emit a high pitched sound outside of the range of human hearing and can be effective at making the rats move on. They only cover so many square metres each though, so you may need to buy more than one depending on how big your premises are. I expect ebay probably have them on there somewhere.

eliminate any food/water source. they have hav- a-hart traps which catch them so u can take them down the street to the woods somewhere instead of killing them. make sure theyre closed when not in use. if u just kill them which is mean others will still keep coming back. try strong scents such as cayenne pepper, moth balls, or peppermint extract because they hate the smell. sprinkle it in the area they r in.

clear any wood piles or lumber that is not being used.
trim bushes, vines and tall grasses.
keep any trash in an airtight container with a sturdy lid.

I had rats in my roof once.

I bought a plug which transmitted some sort of sonic sound. Unheard by humans but bannished the rats and they never came back.

Get in contact with a pest controller. They will probably have something along those lines!

Pick a lawyer already, then you'll only have 1!

Clean, clean, clean. Poison, Poison, Poison. Find out where they are coming from. If you can't get rid of them in a month, call an exterminator...

I had that problem.
Remove all food sources including open trash cans with food.
Put seals on the bottom of all doors
Check outside. Do the neighbors have dogs?
Is there a food source?
Is there vegitation for them to hide.
Use traps, not poison.
They get used to poison.
Moth balls work but do not put them inside. We did..big mistake.

Moth balls have always worked for us. But don't use a lot, they are very strong. Read the package carefully.
