If you are using Windows XP SP2 use the popup blocker contained with the firewall there. In addition to that install the Yahoo! Toolbar WITH Popup Blocker and activate it. Also install the Google Toolbar WITH Popup Blocker and activate it. I have all three and very seldom does a popup get past them. You can download both toobars from their own sites.
Also, you need a good anti-virus program. I use Avast Antivirus Free version. It is the most powerful free Antivirus you can get as far as I have experienced. Why pay for protection when you can get just as good for free? You can download it from http://www.download.com/ BTW: if you have Norton, get rid of it and use something else. Norton used to be a great program but now all it does is eat up resources slowing your computer and worse yet, opening up holes through which other types of malware or even hackers might be able to penetrate.
Spyware is another problem and is sometimes spread by popups. I have used Spybot Search & Destroy and LAVASOFT's Ad-Aware SE Personal for over five years with no problems. They compliment each other PERFECTLY! They, too, are FREE. You can dowload them at: http://www.download.com/

To stop pop-ups open Internet explorer and click on tools and then Internet options. Click on the privacy tab and where it says Block all pop-ups click the box so there is a tick in it.

Or you can use Mozilla Firefox instead of Microsoft Internet Explorer. It works great with one minor problem. Occasionally I run into a page that isn't completely compatible with Mozilla - particularly if I want to print something from the page.
You can download it at:

all you need are 3 programs to rid yourself of the spyware you are infected with.
go to www.download.com and get
spybot search & destroy
spywareblaster
hijackthis
that should remove your spyware and if your browser was hijacked (where you keep being sent to some website you dont want, and cant change the setting back to where you had it) it will return it to normal.
