I think the best video editor is Pinnacle Studio. It costs less than $100 and has two video tracks for overlays and sound effect track and a music track available for intermixing. With the sound from the video, that is three sound sources!

The interface is very intuitive and it has many effects like Slo mo, fast motion, and many more. They have many transitions to use between shots.

It depends what you want to do with them. If it's just footage of your band that you want to put music to, use any old crapola that comes with a computer. Try that out first to get used to doing it--good stuff is real expensive.

The good stuff:

Try Adobe Premier Pro (get After Effects too if you want to get real creative)

or Final Cut or Avid (I hate Avid)

These are all mucho expensive and require a lot in terms of extra equipment if you're going to get serious and are going to be doing a lot of projects (like extra storage, lotsa ram, a VTR deck so you don't kill your camera...and a good couple of cameras). It'll cost you thousands to go "pro." That's why I say try out a few on a consumer movie maker...and go on from there.

Windows XP has included a killer app called Windows MovieMaker. It does not have all the bells and whistles to make an MTV video, but it's FREE and it's already on your PC! Just hit the START button on your lower left and look for WINDOWS MOVIEMAKER in the list.
