Ahh, finally … Labor Day. In the United States, it’s a day of observance to recognize organized labor. A day off work, for some, just another workday for others. I find it strange that this holiday was created to honor the working man/woman and yet we expect service people to work on that day. Starbucks, McDonalds, Ralphs, National Parks, malls, gas stations, etc., … they’re all open that day, and we expect their employees to be working, right?

When you accept employment with a company in the US you understand what the parameters of that employment are, holidays observed, hourly rate, work schedule, vacation time etc. From my point of view it doesn't matter what days you get off as long as your happy with those days that you do get. The most wonderful thing about the US is that when you aren't satisfied you can decline the position or quit at any time. We call it freedom and celebrate it and those who made it possible on Memorial day, July 4, and November 11 every year. Quite frankly I'd prefer that there wasn't anyone at National or State parks other than me :)

Well those jobs you mentioned aren't actual "manual labor". Given they should get the option of taking the day off if they feel the need, but the holiday was more meant to honor laborers. Something about lifting heavy things makes you want to take a day off and sit around eating meat. If youre not so tired when you get off work that you dont have the energy to shower, if you dont wake up so sore that you cant move your fingers then you dont possibly know what real labor is.

Ironic, isn't it? This holiday was created back in the day when shops closed at 6 pm and were closed on Sundays. Now, all it means is the end of summer.

I think it's an option for them to work though and in most cases they get time and a half or double time to do it.
