Is it due to an inability to relate to adults?

I don't think so. I think there are a couple of factors. One is an incredible abundance of pictures and images available today [on the internet, mostly], that show younger and younger girls involved in sex and sexual situations. In a lot of the cases the girls are not legal age in a lot of this images and videos on websites.

On top of that, you have parents allowing their little kids to have the latest clothes (some of them very risque and revealing), so that they look like little adults - little sexy adults.

Then there are also sites online that feature these little children in very sexy and revealing poses.

If that weren't enough, there are lots of sites online (including chat rooms on AOL) where there are people openly trading child porn with each other (I encountered it on AOL by accident, so I know it's there). They speak in code to each other and, generally, will only send child porn to someone who has already sent them some, so as to avoid being busted ("entrapment").

I am convinced it was this kind of pervert that started killing all the little girls a few years ago (remember that one summer where it seemed every day a new little girl was missing, kidnapped, and found murdered?). . little girls like JonBenet Ramsey, Jessica Lunsford, Samantha Runion, Elizabeth Smart, etc. etc. etc. . (I'm not saying that all these girls (mentioned) were dressed inappropriately, but they reaped the fallout of pervs concluding the idea that little girls are for sex, which in part is fostered by those little girls dressed like prostitutes.

I am sure this is the work of pedophiles who got their appetite whetted by going to these porn sites and trading and downloading child porn, and then, after their appetites had been whetted, they allowed these perverted images (of little children being raped by adults) to fester and incubate in their minds, til they finally had their desires so whipped up into a frenzy that they went out and found a child to abduct, rape (and, of course, then they felt they had to kill the child so the child couldn't ID them).

And, of course, the fact that these little girls are dressed in very sexy and revealing clothing by their foolish parents makes them very alluring to these pervs, so I think that part is very obvious.

Any parent that allows his/her little girl to dress like a little prostitute is asking to have the child abducted, raped and murdered. And if it doesn't happen to their child, they are still contributing to some other little child being murdered, by contributing to the environment in which little girls are sexual objects to be desired and (if possible) taken.

I am 100% sure this is how it goes. . the pattern from beginning to end.

They usually come from abusive homes with people in their lives who constantly give them "mixed messages" & torture their children in ways that even they (parents/caregivers) are unaware of. It is passed down from generation to generation & it takes on many forms from slight to extreme. Unfortunately, most of us only hear about it when it reaches the extreme phases & someone gets caught or the injured party steps into the limelight to expose their abusers. I think your "average" pedophile has no emotional links to reality & sees their "victims" as being no different from a stuffed animal & cannot process a cry for help from their victim as anything other than an annoyance that needs to be taught a lesson, just like someone once taught them a lesson in much of the same cruel ways. At some point, their thinking became twisted & they began to process information in a much different manner than the average person who had a more stable & loving environment from their caregivers/parents.

People who sexually abuse children often have experienced some form of abuse themselves - not necessarily sexual abuse - but some psychic trauma. There are various theories and beliefs that all pedophiles are not the same. Some will only have sex with children and do not have any adult sexual relationships - these are called fixated. Others only revert to sexual relationships with children when they are under stress. They are frequently married or in a relationship with an adult. They revert to children as a copying strategy to deal with their stress.

"Inabilty to relate to adults" is usually one trait; so is a previous "molestation" as a child. Some say it is partly because of a delayed mental growth (usually due to a childhood molestation). There may be an increased libido, and a need to feel looked up to.
Then kids are usually very trusting; so a pedophile finds it easier to either abuse and dominate a trusting kid if they want to abuse; or "be closer" to a trusting kid if they actually care for the kid.

Then there's the biggest names in fashion courting 14-y-o girls and trotting them out as the social trophy of womanly physical beauty. As well as a $multi-Billion empire based on women trying to make THEMSELVES look younger.

Some people think pedophilia is "dangerous".
"Dangerous"? Mutual masturbation dangerous? Full-body massages dangerous? Tickle-fights dangerous?
"...one teacher allowed a girl to fall from the flying rings because he did not dare catch her." ("Paedophilia: the Public Health Problem of the Decade")
THIS is dangerous! This FEAR that is being created by the oversimplification and demonification of everyday human interactions. (And the real dangerous guys are getting out of prison to make room for Joe so he won't 'moke his weed??)

Then again, maybe it's a gift from an all-knowing, all powerful loving God.
It's interesting to study the history of what it means to be a "child". Interesting that those who think they're protecting them most are those who put them on such a precarious pedestal of what we today think of as "childhood". "No respect." - Rodney Dangerfield

It could be cause by a number of things.Abuse of some type,or not realizing that human beings are not to react to every though or desire they have....unlike animals.I sometimes think pedophiles find that wonderful innocence that babies and young children have, kinda intoxicating and they take it too far.

Pedophiles are not suffering from inadequacies with adult relationships. They just have an unusual attraction to children, usually derived from having been abused in childhood themselves (in just about every case).

There are two or more factors. One is a sexual desire for children that cannot be stopped. Two is a power trip received by having power over children. I'm sure there are more, but they are psychosis.
