Mostly by looking at the reliability of the source giving the information to you, and by finding someone who's actually doing the job from home. MSN.com and about.com both have great articles on legitimate work from home companies and industries. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
There's the old standby, open your own childcare center, but that always seemed like an awful LOT of work to me, and still no access to benefits unless you get a franchise or join a small business coop.
The biggest work from home industries, where you can do full time/part time and still get insurance and benefits from some companies, seem to be medical transcription and customer service/email support. I have a friend who works full time from home doing medical transcription with www.webmedx.com and she has been happy for the last 3 years.
Businesses such as webmedx.com, medquist.com, and spheris.com prefer 1-2 years experience but will also take people trained by www.careerstep.com because they have a huge 'experience' part in their curriculum.
Most local junior colleges also offer all the classes you need to get started as a transcriptionist, and have partnerships with local medical offices so you can get the needed experience.
MSN also had an article on 4 legitimate work from home businesses with an emphasis on customer service/catalog order taking jobs.. http://moneycentral.msn.com/content/CollegeandFamily/Raisekids/P142363.asp
Also, about.com did a piece.
http://jobsearchtech.about.com/od/jobs/a/cust_ser_jobs.htm
So did cnn.com
http://money.cnn.com/2005/11/23/news/economy/annie/fortune_annie112305/index.htm
Most of these jobs do require 'uninterrupted time' so you would still need 'quiet space' at home.

Hi,
First, I would look at the claims of the company. If they claim you can make $100k per year by doing no work, they are probably fake. If however, they offer a more realistic income and require work to be done. Basically ask yourself, why would some one pay me to do whatever it is.
Second, I recommend doing a google search for the company name and "SCAM". The internet is a great place to sound off about getting scammed and complain. If you find the company has taken others it should be a red flag to stay away.
Third, although the above two items won't rule out everything. I think this last point will rule out a very large majority of the bad opportunities. Carefully read how much money you have to put into the business, and if there are any requirements to getting paid. I have NEVER seen a legitimate company ask its employees to pay a membership fee. If they business works, why would they possibly need to charge you to work there.
In closing, I wish you the best of luck. I have known several people to get legitimate work from home jobs so they do exist. Just look for places in which you are adding value and it is more efficient to work from home like account management or writing.
Hope this helps,
Leo

I have been working from home since October 2005. I resigned from my post on June 1, 2006. I went through extensive Web searching for at least a year before I got this job.
Based on experience, the work from home things are true (1) when the company or the website is not asking for any registration fee; (2) when the job requires for the person's expertise; (3) when one has to really do work, and hard work if the person wants to earn more; (4) when they have land based office that you could personally visit; and lastly and most important of all (5) when you are really receiving your "due" compensation as specified in the contract.
Beware of those who are offering easy cash for a fee! They are mostly scams.

So let's have a look at something here...do you see all of those links they gave you in their answers? Ok, now do you see how they all have a series of numbers after them or some sort form of this "www.whatever.com/iscampeople" yeah, that's because they ONLY want to make money off from you. They are not in it for you; they are in it for themselves. Now back to the point, you want to make some extra money from home it seems...I have actually had some pretty nice results with this (you may want to check it out if you have time):
http://www.mittenstate.ws
Go there, view the video, and it explains it all from there. I can walk you through the process step by step if needed just to make sure you are successful. (Please keep in mind; this is NOT a get rich quick scheme.) In my opinion, the best thing about this is that it doesn’t require a high startup investment. (Considering you can start for free). I definitely recommend test driving it. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me on yahoo messenger (zathrak_gdi). I'd love to give you more details! Hope This Helps and Good Luck!

I can only speak for the one I work with and have been onboard for 6 weels now. It's solid, for real and debt free.
I joined because of $$$, freedom, the challenge, low entry fee (I've found that the one's that are free ARE NOT THE KIND THAT I WANT TO WORK FOR!) , a chance to be creative, opportunity to work around positive people and more - much more.
Shoot me an e-mail, tell me you are serious, and I will provide you with the details that's important to you.

I like to use the annoying way. I call them and I ask every stupid question, every smart question, on and on. Eventually they all (at least for me) start saying things like.."I don't have that info right now." Or "I can't seem to find that now" and an I'm not sure is a red flag. Good Luck.

The best way to tell is if they ask for money up front; it might have a whiff of legitimacy, but you won't be making any money.
