the semi comes from when trains moved most of the items by rail. The truck was a semi because the load was charged by how many semis it had to be broken into.

This was many years ago and the term has stuck

Because most big trucks use what is called a semi-diesel engine. A full diesel engine, as designed by Herr Diesel, works to compress the fuel until it ignites by compression ignition alone. A semi-diesel engine uses glow plugs to heat the air/fuel mixture to help the ignition along until the engine is up to temp.

A truck-tractor hooks up to and pulls a trailer.

A full trailer has a front axle. A semi-trailer has no front axle. Hence, semi-trailer.
A farm tractor may pull a full trailer, such as a hay wagon. It has a drawbar to hook up to. That bar has a steering axle on it. Semi trailers have no steering axle.
