I'm an expert on that, I was in eighth grade last school year.

To answer your question...it varies from place to place. Here in my district it is from a very scientific point of view. Just the basics, "this body part is called the so-and-so" and you are taught that abstinence is the best method for the prevention of STD's and pregnancy. For me they were really good about not pressing any morals, which I liked. They tell you the cold, hard facts and that's about it, unless you ask the teacher a question. For example, they won't push any beliefs on you like "you shouldn't have sex until marriage." Instead they say stuff like "abstinence is safer because it keeps you from getting these health conditions."

Usually the teacher will send home a permission form, and parents are welcome to preview any materials, videos, etc. to see if it is right for their child.

In 8th grade it depends on your school. We learned about menstruation, eating disorders, expressing anger, ST D's, drugs, diseases. That's about it. hopefully you don't have to learn this until 9th grade but my science teacher thought we didn't have enough sex education and made us watch a movie that talked about both male and female reproductive organs, functions of them, and childbirth. Embarrassing at the time.

In 9th grade family life you learn about sexually transmitted diseases, pregnancy, drinking and drug abuse, abuse, peer pressure, male and female reproductive systems, periods, exercising, eating disorders, AIDS, proper condom use, abstinence... basically everything. I had family life last year in 9th grade and they grouped the females and males together this time instead of splitting them apart.

I don't know, I think it deponds based on where you go to school. In my school, which goes up to 8 th grade, they don't even have family life.
