you can open the case and clean any dirt or object that may have gone in and obstructing the directional pad. its only a plastic button with a ruber that is making the contact with the board. so a nice cleaning would do the trick.

You could try doing it on your own and risk causing more damage or contact your local computer or electronics stores to see if they offer repair for it. Some times the after market video game stores offer such a service, the stores that buy and sell used games.
