Malaysia's 49th Independence has come and gone without as much fanfare, in my opinion, as the previous years. To say that Malaysians are not a patriotic people would be somewhat misleading, as I believe (and this is unproven by any polls, etc) that the majority of Malaysians are patriotic at heart and would never betray the nation under any circumstances (well, maybe the occasional dig or two, but that can't be considered unpatriotic!).

Instead of flying high the flag of Malaysia to show our patriotism, I have always held to the belief that patriotism lies in the heart. This is to say, no amount of flag flying will be able to create the feeling of patriotism if the feeling is not there in the first place. Thus I feel that calls by politicians to fly our flag high during Independence Day (only), is a bit imbecilic, for want of a stronger word. Having said that, I also believe that the spirit of patriotism, while still in existence, is quickly waning in the hearts of our youths.

In celebrating our independence (and defending it!), I'm compelled to comment that we should do something fast to return the spirit of patriotism of yore, when true racial integration took place. We are really beginning to see minute cracks in the Wall of Malaysia due to dissents created by unscrupulous parties who manipulate people's minds and clouding their judgments using politics, religion and race as main thrusts. We should ignore these people; not fight back, but just ignore them. They will know how to shut up and stop their politicking once they realize it's impossible to shake the people's unity.

Unity is hard to achieve, and as we near our 50th Independence, we should seriously commit ourselves to it. Tolerance is, and has always been, the key to unity, especially for a country like Malaysia that houses many races under its roof.

HAPPY MERDEKA!
