About the ACLU
The ACLU is the nation's foremost advocate of individual rights -- litigating, legislating, and educating the public on a broad array of issues affecting individual freedom in the United States. The American Civil Liberties Union is a non-profit, nationwide membership organization dedicated to the defense of individual rights and liberties. The essential goals of the ACLU are embodied in the U.S. Bill of Rights which, in summary, provided for:
* Freedom of Speech and Press
* Freedom of Religion and Separation of Church and state
* Due Process of Law
* Privacy
* Equal Protection Under the Law
* Freedom from Cruel and Unusual Punishment
The ACLU is not a public defender like Legal Services or Legal Aid. It does not handle criminal cases or civil disputes or choose sides according to financial criteria. Nor does it take political sides; the ACLU is neither liberal nor conservative, Republican nor Democratic. It is a nonprofit, nonpartisan, public interest organization devoted exclusively to protecting the basic civil liberties of all Americans, and extending them to groups that have traditionally been denied them. In its almost seven decades in existence, the ACLU has become a national institution, and is widely recognized as the country's foremost advocate of individual rights.

The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) is a leftist, secular-progressive organization. It was run for its first 30 years by an American named Roger Baldwin, who helped found it in 1920. Baldwin supported communism, but later denounced it in his book, A New Slavery, which condemned "the inhuman communist police state tyranny" [12]). This organization pursues a leftist agenda that includes censoring prayer and recognition of God in public institutions, such as public schools. Currently, Anthony Romero is the first openly gay CEO to run the organization. Declassified documents and letters link early ACLU leaders with Communist Party. Helen Chaffee Biehle also indicated in her article "Focus: The Seduction of the American Public Library" that the ACLU was also nihilistic and individualistic in its philosophy since its founding.

They are a organization that was born out of the Communist party .
While they mainly represent liberal causes ,they have been known to support some Conservative causes
Roger Baldwin and Crystal Eastman founded the ACLU in 1920 along with three other organizations dedicated to the most leftist of causes. The histories of these two individuals belie their claims of patriotism and respect for the Constitution.
Baldwin openly sought the utter destruction of American society. Fifteen years after the founding of the ACLU, Baldwin wrote:
I am for Socialism, disarmament and ultimately, for the abolishing of the State itself ... I seek the social ownership of property, the abolition of the propertied class and sole control of those who produce wealth. Communism is the goal

It's a liberal organization. Liberals will defend both sides, because what is really being defended is not the person or the side.
What is being defended is the right, held by all people against the government. And those rights don't take sides.

hahaha that's funny stuff.. I did hear that story before. I'd say I'm more left of the spectrum... what's funny about that is I actually do like lime in my beer.... my God maybe this story is true!! That's ok though I work in the construction industry and drink domestic beer, so maybe I'm a half-breed.

Gimme a break.....they are the most liberal of liberal groups in the whole world. They are the group that defended the right for NAMBLA (the pedophiles) to openly meet, organize and maintain a website. The list of their atrocities to the human race and society are sickening.

The ACLU generally defends those who are poor and defenseless. There are no Republicans falling into that category. Therefore the Republicans accuse the ACLU of being liberal. It isn't, but they like to put a label on things.
