Hold some 'Together Everyone Achieves More' meetings involving all staff. This will encourage the less confident members to participate and appropriate reactions will enhance self esteem.

I would dig deep into that training budget of mine and organise a team building day for all the staff.

Team building is an excellent way to boost self confidence and self esteem. It will also promote good will amongst the staff and make them feel part of a family and not just an employee.

With regards to the member of staff that you have singled out as lacking confidence but a competent staff member. I would give this person extra responsibility and a level of autonomy, thus helping to develop and improve not only her interpersonal skills but also help that person to identify their own strengths and weaknesses.

Appraisal time gives an employee the opportunity to identify their own training needs to the appraiser. Well trained staff are happy staff and an asset to any company. All staff should be encourage to identify their own development needs on a regular basis.

yes i have and there is nothing like personal attention. there is never a day that passes that i do not speak to this team member. i also set personal smart objectives to improve the performance of this staff member. smart stands for specific, measureable, attainable, realistic, timed. the objective set for the week is a specific task which can be monitored during the week and is realistically achieveable in the time alloted. when this task has been dealt the staff member has a sense of achievement and a confidence boost. then you move on to the next task. it is never ending development and it works if YOU put in the time and effort.

do not address this in a public situation. what you need to do is pull them aside and LEVEL WITH THEM. say something like, i see you're a great asset here but seems like you're not too confident in your work. make them know you are aware of this and then peel the onion with them and get them to open up. as you find out reasons for this lack of confidence, build on that and counter with positive reinforcement. tell them you are there for them and WILL help them if needed. if you leave them alone then chances are you'll be firing them in a month or so. if you don't care, then forget about it. if you are one of those managers that actually cares about their employees, make yourself available and help them. that's your job.

well making them feel part of the team is the first thing.. always think little steps.. give them something that only they can do so that they can then go spread the word to colleagues in small groups.. build up gradually
