Let's see - basically, you're saying "I need 5 numbers that average out to 85. The first 4 are 92,81,78, and 80."

92+81+78+80 = 331

Average = total / count ; in this case, count is 5 games.
So, what divided by 5 equals 85?
85 x 5 = 425
I need a score that totals 425, and I've bowled 331 and I have 1 game left.

425 - 331 = 94 by my calculator. I gotta bowl 94 this game. Yikes!

Watch out for the gutter balls!

Solve for x: 85*5-(92+81+78+80)=x
x=94

You need to write is as:

(92 + 81 + 78 + 80 + x) / 5 = 85

You divide it by 5 because you want the average and you have 4 scores right noow and after your next one you will have 5. The x is the score you need to have to have a average of 85. Solve for x.

(331 + x) / 5 = 85

331 + x = 425

x = 94

add 92+81+78+80 together and subtract what you get from 85 times 5.
and then you have your answer
(P.S. it's not 98)

Try:

85=(92+81+78+80+X)/5
85x5=(92+81+78+80+X)
425=331+x
X=425-331
X=94

That is your answer
