At some point you will be asked (usually in writing) if you have ever been convicted of a crime. In my state if you lie and answer "no", they will find out and you will not pass to second base.

Don't bother asking if anyone knows what they ask, simply tell the truth. But give some thought to the idea that if you become licensed, then the public has a reasonable expectation to hold you to a higher level of trust. That is at the root of why the government in your state oversees and regulates the profession. You ought to give some thought to the connection that attempted robbery has to crimes of moral turpitude. You have a strike against you, a past bad act. Criminal offender reports are saved for these very purposes. Have you been in trouble at all in the past 11 years? Is there a pattern? Can you be trusted? What have you done to demonstrate redemption?
In short, those licensed have earned a special trust, and the licensing board has a duty to protect the public that may do business with you.
