I "do not" use AOL but have a question about how to change something having to do with AOL. The problem is ... when I come online some people who use AOL know that I am online simply because they have me listed in their e-address book. I really don't like that as it feels it is an intrusion of privacy as the people know I'm online and wonder why I don't email them right away.

Is there a way to fix it so that when we go online we are not visible to AOL users? You know, sometimes you just want to do a quick check of email and then go back offline. I don't want to feel pressured to respond to them immediately just because I know they see that I'm online.

What I am looking for steps that can be taken to remedy this situation. Thank you for your help.

Close your AOL IM program all together. Remove this from your startup programs. From START, hit RUN, and type MSCONFIG. Click on the STARTUP tab, and uncheck the box next to all AOL programs.

Run AOL IM when you want to, not when it wants too. You should be in charge of your computer.

Are you using AIM? That's why they can tell if you're on line. Ditto for Y! IM if you don't log in as hidden. It doesn't matter if they're using AOL or not.

Your messenger for AOL must be coming on, disable it from starting in preferences (if possible) or search the file 'msconfig' in your computer and remove the check mark for it to start with the computer.

So what if you dont respond to them right away when you get online. That is not your 1st priority when you get online. Let them little babys wait till your done checking your email and doing what you gotta do online.
