I'm about to take a class for the hardware portion of the A+ test. After having done so and passing the test I will be fully certified with A+.

Personally I thought about getting a MCSA later on down the road, although, I've noticed you need to know unix/linux for a lot of System Admin jobs. Which I have NO interest in learning. I'm a windows person.

My question is: once I get my A+, what do I do then? My friend says he can get me a job in help desk. Yet there's so many different definitions OF help desk(tier 1, 2, 3, etc.). No one can properly explain these things to me.

The A+ certification will get you in the door a lot of places. What's next depends on what you want to do. If you're strictly a Windows desktop kinda guy, I'd suggest the MCSE certs. If you want to get into high-end networking, get a Cisco certification. Either will make you much more valuable (read - more money) to an employer.

experience is a good place to start. Get a job with a local computer service company. Thats what I did and for the past 6 years I have owned one. School is great, but it cant teach you experience. You will earn more doing service work than school could ever teach you.

Get a job at a place like bestbuy, compusa, office depot just to get your foot in the door somewhere, and then apply at higher places of business that will pay you more.

Don't hold yourself back... learn the linux/unix stuff too. The real world is not just Microsoft.
